COVID-19 : Onwuegbu donates palliatives for the poor in Oji River Lga,Enugu state

MAURICE OKAFOR writes that Engr Sir Anayo Onwuegbu, the Chief Executive officer/Managing Director of ANBEEZ services ltd, an indigenous construction firm, has donated food items and cash gifts to the very poor and vulnerable in Oji River local government area of Enugu state, to help cushion the adverse effects of COVID-19 pandemic in their various families.

His donation came at a time when both the state government and 17 Council chairmen in the state are in vital need of support from prominent Nigerians to assist in providing succour for the vulnerable in the state

The items which include 3,000 bags of 10kg rice,500 bags of 25 kg rice,3,000 tubers of yam, 1,000 cartons of indomie noodles and an undisclosed amount of money were shared among 29 autonomous communities in Oji River Council area of Enugu state.

The donation which took place at country home of Sir Onwuegbu at Akpugoeze community were shared among the President Generals(PG’s) of the 29 communities and Councillors of the 20 wards in the council area for upward distribution among the vulnerable in their respective communities within Oji River local government area.

In his brief speech, Engr Onwuegbu, whose philanthropy and humanitarian services in Enugu state, has won him the traditional title of “OMEIHEUKWU” pleaded with the PG’s to ensure equitable distribution of the food items to the most vulnerable in their various communities. He extolled the efforts of Enugu state government led by Governor Ugwuanyi in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic and urged them to maintain all safety rules as directed by the government, even as they imbibe social distancing and regular washing of hands a culture.

In a brief chat thereafter, the Chairman of Oji River council area, Barrister Udemezue, who witnessed the event expressed gratitude to Engr Anayo Onwuegbu for accommodating all the 29 communities in the gesture, and prayed God to reward him abundantly. He called on other successful sons and daughters of Oji River local government to emulate the gestures of Engr Sir Anayo Onwuegbu.

The Oji River Council boss commended Dr Eric Oluedo, a former commissioner in Enugu state, for donating palliatives for the upkeep of patients of Oji River leprosy settlement and students of Oji River special school for the blind, deaf and dumb.
The member representing Oji River constituency in the state house of assembly, Hon Geoffrey Mbah, who also witnessed the event, expressed gratitude to Engr Sir Anayo Onwuegbu for the gesture, stating the palliatives will impact positively in the lives of many rural poor.
