By Felix Khanoba

The Federal Government says it has sacked the governing councils of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko and University of Port-Harcourt (UNIPORT).

The Maritime University’s governing council was inaugurated in March 2018 with the current Minister of State for Petroleum, Mr Timipre Sylva as chairman.

A terse statement made available to The AUTHORITY on Thursday in Abuja by the Federal Ministry of Education, said the dissolution of the two governing councils takes immediate effect.

The statement signed by Mr Ben Goong, a director in charge of information in the ministry, did not give reasons for the government’s action.

The statement read : “The Federal Government has approved the dissolution of the Governing Councils of the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State and the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, in Bayelsa State.

“The Honourable Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, today, said, the dissolution of the Governing Council of the two Universities takes immediate effect.

“The Honourable Minister thanked members of the Governing Council for their service to the institutions and wished them success in their future endeavours.”
