Ebonyi Assembly investigates alleged killing of two villagers by police

From Angela Mbaocha, Ebonyi

The Ebonyi State House of Assembly, on Tuesday sets up a 7-man Committee to probe the killing of 21 year-old Monday Nwali Otubo and Emeka Paul Nwali, 17 -year-old, all from Ezzagu in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi state.

The member representing Ishielu South State constituency, Hon. Arinze Chukwu, brought a petition to the house demanding for a probe into the killing to ascertain the remote and immediate causes of the death of the deceased.

It would be recalled that the deceased were shot dead last month by men of the Ebonyi State Police Command while on a mission to rescue some businessmen allegedly abducted in the community

The Police alleged that Emeka and Paul were part of the gang that kidnapped the businessmen, an allegation the community debunked and they insisted that the police killed innocent villagers.

Presenting the petition, the lawmaker reiterated that the investigation and subsequent prosecution of the perpetrators of the dastardly act would douse the already existing tension in the community.

The Speaker, Rt Hon Francis Ogbonnaya Nwifuru, told the committee to ensure that those behind the killing are made to face the law.

The 7-man committee has the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Odefa Obasi Odefa as Chairman. Other members include Hon. Victor Chukwu, Hon. Christian Usulor, Hon. Humphrey Nwuruku, Hon. Kingsley Ogbonna Ikoro, Hon. Onu Nwonye and Hon. (Mrs) Chinwe Lilian Nwachukwu.
