Defection: Abuja High Court sacks former -Speaker Yakubu Dogara

By Myke Uzendu, Abuja

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara has been sacked from the House of Representatives by the Federal High Court Abuja on Friday over his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former Speaker, who represents Bogoro/Dass Federal Constituency of Bauchi State, was the Speaker of the House of Representatives between 2015 and 2019. He was re-elected back to the House at the expiration of his Speakership in 2019 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

However in 2021, Dogara defected to the ruling APC, which made the PDP to approach a federal High Court to reclaim their mandate.

Justice D.U. Okorowo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in his judgement held that the lawmaker’s defection to the APC was not in order and ordered him to vacate his seat immediately.

The judgement came few months after the Governor of Ebonyi State and some members of the Ebonyi State assembly were equally sacked for joining the ruling party but the matter is still pending in an appeal court.

The party is also seeking to reclaim their mandate in Cross River state following the defection of the governor Prof. Ben Ayade and some members of the state assembly from the PDP.
