A civil society group, Volunteer Media Advocacy for Accountable Leadership, has commended the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, for his call on parliaments worldwide to uphold peace, justice, and humanity amid rising global tensions.
The commendation was contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the group’s Country Director of Mobilization, Joseph C. Ezejiegu.
Ezejiegu described Akpabio’s remarks at the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) as “timely, courageous, and reflective of the urgent need for responsible legislative leadership across the world.”
He noted that at a time when global conflicts, political divisions, and socio-economic challenges continue to threaten stability, the Senate President’s message underscored the critical role of parliaments in fostering dialogue, strengthening democratic institutions, and promoting inclusive governance.
“The call by Senator Akpabio for lawmakers to act as guardians of peace and justice resonates strongly with the ideals of accountable leadership and people-centered governance,” Ezejiegu said.
He added that the theme of the IPU Assembly, ‘Nurturing Hope, Securing Peace and Ensuring Justice for Future Generations,’ aligns with the advocacy group’s mission to promote transparency, civic responsibility, and ethical leadership in Nigeria and beyond.
Ezejiegu urged Nigerian lawmakers and their counterparts globally to translate such commitments into concrete actions that would improve the lives of citizens and restore public trust in democratic institutions.
The group reaffirmed its support for initiatives that advance accountability, good governance, and sustainable peace, while encouraging continuous engagement between leaders and the people they serve.
