The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has expressed grief over the death of its former Managing Director, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, describing the late elder statesman as a key figure in the development of Nigeria’s maritime and trade facilitation sector.
Tukur, who died on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the age of 90, served as General Manager and Chief Executive of the NPA from 1975 to 1982.
The Authority, in a statement issued on Sunday, said Tukur’s tenure contributed to the foundation for improved port efficiency and modernization.
The current Managing Director of the NPA, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, described the deceased as a “pillar of trade facilitation,” noting that his leadership left an enduring imprint on the Authority and the wider maritime industry.
Dantsoho said Tukur’s contributions to the development of Nigeria’s trade and port system would continue to be remembered by stakeholders in the sector.
“I join the global trade facilitation community in mourning,” Dantsoho said.
The NPA Managing Director also joined the Executive Governor of Adamawa State to receive the remains of the former NPA boss.
Dantsoho, on behalf of the management and staff of the Authority, expressed condolences to Tukur’s immediate family, the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the people of Adamawa State.
“On behalf of the entire Management and Staff of the NPA, we express our profound condolences and deepest sympathies to his immediate family, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the good people of Adamawa State,” he said.
Beyond his years at the NPA, Tukur was a prominent businessman and public figure whose career spanned the corporate and political spheres.
The Authority said his contributions to nation-building extended beyond the maritime sector, describing his record of public service as part of his enduring legacy.
The NPA prayed for the repose of Tukur’s soul and for strength and comfort for his family, associates and the people of Adamawa State.
