Prof. Rufa’i Ahmed Alkali, National Coordinator of the National Movement for Tinubu-Shettima 2027 – Forward Nigeria, has mourned the death of his former Media Aide, Mr. Mike Odiakose, describing him as a dedicated journalist, trusted ally and fellow compatriot.
Alkali, in a tribute issued following Odiakose’s death on September 17, 2026, said his passing was a huge loss to his family, the journalism profession and Nigeria’s political communication community.
He said Odiakose’s contributions to journalism and public affairs had created a vacuum that would be difficult to fill.
According to Alkali, Odiakose was an accomplished political journalist whose career included stints with reputable newspapers such as The Observer, Nigerian Pilot and Daily Assets.
He described the late journalist as a professional who distinguished himself through dedication, integrity and commitment to factual reporting, particularly in his coverage of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Alkali recalled that his relationship with Odiakose began during his tenure as PDP National Publicity Secretary between 2008 and 2012, when the deceased was among journalists who closely covered the activities of the party.
He said Odiakose stood out not only for his professionalism but also for his constructive advice and understanding of political communication.
“When I was appointed the Special Adviser, Political Affairs by the former President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, in June 2014, I did not hesitate to bring Mike into my team as my Media Aide. It was a decision I never regretted,” Alkali said.
He noted that during the transitional period, Odiakose demonstrated calmness, diligence, competence and uncommon loyalty, while providing valuable support in shaping media interventions and communication strategies.
Alkali also disclosed that Odiakose had recently been nominated to serve as a member of the National Movement for Tinubu-Shettima 2027 – Forward Nigeria, describing his death as the loss of a “jewel.”
Beyond his official duties, Alkali said Odiakose remained a trusted confidant and dependable ally after the 2015 presidential election, describing him as a man of humility, sincerity and wisdom.
“The news of his passing came as a rude shock, especially at a time when Nigeria is once again approaching another important phase of its democratic journey,” he said.
“The nation has lost a seasoned journalist whose wealth of experience and institutional knowledge would have continued to enrich political reporting and public discourse.”
Alkali extended his condolences to Odiakose’s immediate family, friends, colleagues and associates, as well as the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), particularly the FCT Council.
He said the council had recently experienced the loss of several distinguished members.
While mourning the deceased, Alkali urged Nigerians to celebrate Odiakose’s life and legacy of truth, professionalism, friendship and service.
