By Chesa Chesa

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for stronger protection, justice, and economic empowerment for widows across Nigeria, Africa, and the world, urging society to eliminate harmful traditional practices that dehumanise widows.

In a message to mark International Widows’ Day, the First Lady appealed to governments, institutions, and communities to reaffirm their commitment to supporting widows and safeguarding their rights.

Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Justice, Dignity and Economic Power for Widows – The African Perspectives,” Mrs. Tinubu stressed the need to ensure widows live free from discrimination, poverty, exclusion, and harmful cultural practices.

She said widows deserve legal protection and access to opportunities that would enable them rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.

“Widows must be protected by laws that uphold their rights and be empowered through education, access to opportunities, and economic support to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope,” she stated.

The First Lady emphasized that across Africa, harmful traditional practices against widows must be abolished, noting that no woman should suffer indignity or injustice because of the loss of a spouse.

She further called for compassion, inclusion, and stronger policies that would protect widows and create safer, more prosperous societies.

According to her, empowering widows economically is essential to helping them provide for their families and secure a better future.

Mrs. Tinubu concluded by wishing widows across the world strength and resilience as they commemorate the day, while renewing her advocacy for their welfare and inclusion.
