Why Jonathan signed the ‘Freedom of Information Bill into Law’ – Maku

From Abubakar Yakubu, Lafia. PDP chieftain and former information minister, Labaran Maku has said that former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration signed the Freedom of Information Bill into Law in order to give persons, groups and organisations the right to access information from government, agencies as well as private and public sectors providing public services.

The former minister who stated this during the recent media dialogue organized by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Campaign Council in Karu, Nasarawa State, said that the media had never been free under any government since 1960, except during that period.

‘Not only did President Jonathan tolerate all manner of unfair criticisms by columnists, commentators and politicians, he never took them personal nor did he put anyone in jail, ” he added.

He said due to the Act, the Nigerian media became the freest in Africa and the world..
Maku vowed that the PDP will return to power at the centre and in Nasarawa State during the 2023 elections.
