Alleged Electoral Violence: Doguwa Regains Freedom

The Majority Leader of House of Representatives, Honourable Alhassan Ado Doguwa who was remanded at Goron Dutse Correctional Centre by a Chief Magistrate Court over alleged electoral violence, was on Monday, granted bail by a Federal High Court sitting in Kano.

Doguwa and Bashir Dahiru were charged for alleged culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy, mischief by fire and inciting public disturbance.

The House Majority Leader who is representing Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency won election to return to the House of Representatives in the Saturday, 25 February Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The prosecuting Counsel, Mrs. Aisha Salisu, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on Februray 26 at Tudun Wada Dankadai in Tudun Wada Local Government Area of Kano State.

She said the offences are contrary to sections 97, 114, 221 ,247 and 336 of the Penal Code.

“The defendants conspired with five others still at large, conducted themselves in a manner to cause breach of public peace and burnt the office of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Tudun Wada Dankadai.

“Two persons lost their lives at the said NNPP office on the day of the incident, while six persons sustained various degrees of injuries,’’ she added.

Salisu asked the Court not to admit the defendants to bail in the interest of public peace, and justice, adding that, “any person accused of committing a capital offence which attracts severe punishment should not be granted bail.”

Doguwa’s lawyer, Bar. Nuraini Jimoh, moved an exparte application for the enforcement of rights of his client.

He urged the Court to release the accused on bail.

In his ruling, the presiding judge, Justice Yunusa Muhammad granted the bail application with N500 million.
