Benue worsening insecurity: Reps’ member calls for expanded stakeholders meeting

Worried by the worsening security situation in the state, a member of the National Assembly, Arc. Austin Asema Achado has called for an expanded stakeholders meeting to fashion a way forward and stem the spate of insecurity in the state.

In a press statement made available to The AUTHORITY newspaper in Makurdi Tuesday, Hon. Achado said “I wish to express my deep concerns about the recurring incidents of killings, kidnapping and displacement of villagers in the state, caused by herdsmen and militants. These incidents have had devastating effect on the lives, safety, and livelihoods of the people of Benue State”.

Hon. Arc. Achado said he understand that the Benue State Government is trying to address the situation, “but I firmly believe that an expanded stakeholders meeting is crucial at this stage. I humbly request the Benue State Government to take the initiative in convening such a meeting without delay”.

“The purpose of the meeting would be to facilitate dialogue among key stakeholders including government officials, traditional and political leaders, community and business leaders, security agencies, farmers, local residents, and other relevant parties. By bringing together these diverse perspectives, we can collectively work towards finding viable solutions that can promote peace in the state” Arc. Achado said.

The Gwer/Gwer-West Representative pointed out that, “this meeting will prioritize discussion in the following areas, 1. To assess the implementation of the Anti-Open Grazing law, which is aimed at promoting modern practices for cattle farming. Whether the enforcement of the law by Benue State Government can help reduce conflicts between farmers and herders? 2. Assessing the current situation: Gather information on the extent of the killings, kidnapping and displacement in the state. It’s important to have accurate data to inform decision-making, including alerting President Tinubu, who is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

Speaking further, Hon. Achado said enhancing security measures; discussing strategies to improve security in the state, including increasing police presence in crime prone areas, establishing vigilante groups, and implementing technology-driven solutions like surveillance cameras or drones, strengthening law enforcement: explore measures to enhance the enforcement of the Anti-Open Grazing law, such as training law enforcement agencies, establishing dedicated task forces, or raising public awareness about the law and its benefits, and rehabilitation and support for displaced persons in which ensuring comprehensive rehabilitation and support programs for displaced persons, comprising shelter, healthcare, education, and psychosocial support. Collaborating with relevant organizations, including National Assembly members and other Federal Government Appointees from the state, to provide necessary assistance to affected individuals and families.

“I believe that an expanded stakeholders meeting of this nature will enable us to collectively address the underlying issues behind the recurring violence, displacement, kidnapping and general insecurity. It is only through inclusive and collaborative efforts that we can forge a path towards sustainable peace and harmony in Benue State”.

Hon. Asema Achado who urged the Benue State Government to take immediate action in convening this crucial meeting added that, “time is of the essence, and the Benue community is in dire need of Government proactive intervention”.

According to Hon. Achado, “I am confident that with Governor Alia’s leadership and the combined efforts of all stakeholders, we can bring about positive change and restore peace in our state”.
