COP28: We have donations, commitments to the tune of $750m – DG, NCCC

  • Tinubu is our global climate change champion

Director-General, National Council on Climate Change, Salisu Dahiru on Saturday took stock of ongoing UNFCCC COP28 and said this is the best outing so far at the global event by Nigeria.

Speaking to journalists at the Nigeria Pavilion at COP28 in Dubai, the Director-General commended President Bola Tinubu who he said utilized the Nigerian pavilion to the fullest in reaching out to key nations and major international organizations.

He said the agreement signed by President Tinubu and the the German President and Siemens would create jobs for Nigerians and reduce capital flight.

Dahiru said the high cost of renewable energy, paticularly solar will be reduced with agreements entered by the government.

He said the financial commitments to aid Nigeria’s climate action efforts came from the U.S. Government.

The DG explained that $3 billion from the $5 billion is for the recapitalisation of the Green Climate Fund, while the remaining $2 billion is for the adaptation fund.

In addition, the director general disclosed that Nigeria secured an additional $560 million for loss and damage, a fund operationalised as compensation for climate-induced disasters.

He said President Tinubu who he referred to as Global climate change champion, is the secret behind the outstanding outing of the Nigeria delegation.

“Here we are seeing the direct involvement of our president turning things around for for the best. I don’t think we’ve ever experienced a COP that is as productive as this one. And with the various bilateral and multilateral discussions that President Tinubu was engaged in at the highest level, with variety of global leaders, we have already laid the foundation for the successes.”
