Otunba Segun Showunmi Launches Alternative Movement toRevive Nigeria’s Democracy

By Jane Okeke

In a bold move to address Nigeria’s growing democratic challenges, Otunba Segun Showunmi, a prominent political figure, unveiled a new initiative, The Alternative, under the umbrella of the National Opposition Movement. This platform aims to restore the integrity and vibrancy of Nigeria’s democracy, which has suffered setbacks since the return to civilian rule in 1999.

Speaking at a media briefing, Showunmi lamented the decline in citizens’ enthusiasm for elections, citing increasing voter apathy, the loss of party ideologies, and the dominance of financial inducements in electoral processes. He expressed concern over what he described as the “highest bidder heist” that now defines the nation’s elections.

“We have watched with agony as clear ideological differences within parties have disappeared, making choices less about values and more about personalities. Sadly, this has evolved dangerously into a money-driven process,” Showunmi stated.

The convener highlighted the critical role of opposition in a thriving democracy but noted the near-absence of a viable opposition to hold the government accountable. He criticized elected opposition members for their lack of courage in addressing pressing national issues, adding that the judiciary and electoral umpire, INEC, have also faced integrity challenges.

Showunmi called for a reorientation of citizens, emphasizing the dangers of vote trading and the consequences of electing individuals with questionable wealth. According to him, The Alternative is committed to advocacy, education, and the eradication of electoral malpractices that undermine democracy.

“We are not evolving into a political party,” he clarified. “Instead, we aim to engage Nigerians, political actors, and stakeholders to promote credible democratic and electoral processes.”

As part of its strategy, The Alternative will embark on a series of zonal town hall meetings to engage citizens and mobilize support. The meetings, set to begin in December 2024, will cover all geopolitical zones, including:

“North Central Zone: December 7, 2024

“North East Zone: December 14, 2024

“North West Zone: January 4, 2025

“South-South Zone: January 11, 2025

“South East Zone: February 8, 2025

“South West Zone: February 15, 2025

“These town halls will serve as platforms for grassroots mobilization and leadership selection at state, local government, and ward levels”.

Showunmi assured that The Alternative would promote peaceful and constructive engagement, steering clear of chaos and mob actions. “Nigeria as a nation and its citizens cannot be manipulated into crisis by charlatans,” he said.

He acknowledged the trust deficit in the country but emphasized the movement’s dedication to the task ahead. “This is a noble task that requires sacrifice, but we are committed to ensuring that the reins of power are not seized by those who continue to pilfer our common patrimony,” he added.

Showunmi extended an invitation to Nigerians from all walks of life to join the movement, emphasizing the need for collective action to protect and sustain the nation’s democracy.

“The march has begun. We are extending our hands in partnership and collaboration to all Nigerians desirous of a vibrant opposition as well as transparent, credible democratic and electoral processes,” he concluded.

With the launch of The Alternative, Nigeria may be on the cusp of a new era in democratic participation, one focused on values, transparency, and the collective well-being of its citizens.
