Borno, Zamfara : CNG seeks thorough investigation over fresh killings, expresses condolences

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has voiced deep concern over the recent tragic killings that have shaken communities in Northern Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the CNG conveyed its condolences to the governments and residents of Borno and Zamfara States following the devastating loss of lives in two separate incidents.

“In Borno State, the brutal killing of 40 farmers by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Kukawa Local Government Area near Daban Leda is a stark reminder of the enduring threat posed by extremist groups such as Boko Haram. This horrific attack has robbed families of their loved ones, communities of their providers, and our nation of hardworking citizens striving to make a living,” the statement said.

The group also lamented the tragedy in Zamfara State, where an airstrike in Tungar Kara mistakenly killed 16 civilians, including members of a local vigilance group. The incident occurred after they were misidentified as bandits fleeing from Gidan Makera in the Buko district of Zurmi Local Government Area.

“This unfortunate event underscores the urgent need to review operational procedures to minimize collateral damage in the fight against insecurity,” the group stated.

The CNG expressed solidarity with the bereaved families and urged immediate support for those affected. Additionally, it called on the Federal Government to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the Zamfara airstrike, ensuring accountability for any operational lapses and implementing measures to prevent future occurrences.

The statement emphasized the need for the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to eradicate terrorism and banditry in affected regions.

It advocated for improved intelligence gathering, greater use of technology, and stronger collaboration with local communities to enhance operational effectiveness and avoid tragic errors.

The CNG criticized what it described as the Federal Government’s misplaced priorities, urging President Bola Tinubu to focus on securing the country and addressing socio-economic challenges instead of pursuing controversial policies that exacerbate the suffering of Nigerians.

“Nigerians are closely watching President Tinubu’s administration, and his leadership will ultimately be judged by its ability to address the insecurity and hardship faced by the people,” the statement said.

The group prayed for the souls of the departed to rest in peace and called for a unified effort to build a safer and more secure Nigeria.
