Group calls for support, equal representation of women in politics

A group popularly known as ARDA Development Communication Incorporated (ARDA), a leading development communication, Non- Governmental Organisation (NGO) based in Nigeria, with focus on fostering sustainable development through Social and Behavioural Change Communication (SBCC) projects within Nigeria and across Africa, in collaborating with the UNWomen,has called for support, equal representation and amplifying women’s voice in politics to ensure gender sensitivity and inclusiveness.

The group made this known in a capacity building training for media professionals as part of the activities implemented under the Advance: Women Political Participation in Nigeria (AWPP) Project, funded by the Government of Canada through the UN Women in Abakaliki recently.

The AWPP project addresses the challenges/barriers that hinder women from taking up political leadership positiNigeriaons in .

Additionally, the project is designed to drive interventions that foster gender equality and inclusive governance in Nigeria,as well as amplify women’s voices and enhance their representation in positions of leadership.

Speaking at the capacity building training,one of the resource persons,Mrs.Mirriam Menkiti stated that the purpose of the training is to help participants have an indept understanding of how the can adopt gender sensitive reporting in discharging their roles to ultimately promote women’s representation in politics.
She noted that media plays a vital role in promoting women political representation in Nigeria, adding that women face numerous challenges, including limited access to resources, political violence, cultural constraints, media biases, religious influence .

Mrs.Menkiti further explained that Gender Sensitive Reporting according to Free Press Unlimited Resource Online,it’s the practice of promoting media content in a way which is sensitive to gender inequality and portrays men and women fairly.

“For the media to accurately mirror society and produce coverage that is complete and diverse,it is critical that it reflects the world as seen through the eyes of all genders.Journalists will help to change attitude by portraying women and men as equally valued and diverse rather than reinforcing problematic gender based.

“Our objectives are to ensure media’s roles in promoting women political leadership,media Ethics and responsible reporting,avoiding harm and sensationalism in news reporting

She,however,urged media practitioners to challenge harmful stereotype by portraying women in diverse roles and context, beyond stereotype,and also provide equal coverage and give women equal attention and coverage in Political reporting

Amplify women voices and feature women's opinion, perspectives, and experience in Political discussion. Media personnels and organizations must at all cost must avoid perpetrating more harm in the presentation and representation of information.
`It is always important to apply the principle ofDO NOT HARM” which emphasizes minimizing harm and avoiding actions that may cause harm to individuals, communities,or societies.
