Solar Power Nigeria, in partnership with the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP) and the Secure Energy Project, has launched the inaugural Solar Power Nigeria Media Story Grant aimed at strengthening renewable energy journalism across Nigeria.
The initiative, unveiled in Abuja on Friday, seeks to support quality reporting on solar energy and the country’s transition to clean and sustainable energy sources.
Under the programme, 16 journalists from print, online, television and radio organisations have been selected to receive grants worth several millions of naira.
The beneficiaries emerged through a competitive selection process and are expected to produce original, well-researched and impactful reports focusing on solar power and its contribution to Nigeria’s energy future.
Speaking on the initiative, Joseph Ibrahim of Solar Power Nigeria said the media plays a critical role in shaping public understanding of energy access and the ongoing energy transition.
According to him, the grant reflects the organisation’s commitment to equipping Nigerian journalists with the resources needed to tell energy stories with greater depth, accuracy and wider reach.
He noted that despite growing interest in renewable energy, there remains a significant gap in sustained and well-resourced reporting that can simplify complex energy policies, technologies and market developments for the public.
The selected journalists are expected to publish or broadcast their stories within four weeks of receiving the grants, with the reports focusing on the opportunities and challenges associated with solar energy adoption in Nigeria.
The organisers said the programme is designed to encourage evidence-based reporting, increase public awareness of renewable energy solutions and contribute to informed discussions on the country’s energy future.
Solar Power Nigeria, GIFSEP and the Secure Energy Project expressed confidence that the initiative would help amplify public understanding of clean energy issues while supporting Nigeria’s efforts to expand access to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy.
