Faleke urges Civil Servants to uphold integrity, due process

By Mercy Aikoye

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Finance, Hon. James Faleke, has called on civil servants to uphold integrity, professionalism and due process in the discharge of their duties, describing them as the backbone of governance and national development.

Faleke made the call in Abuja during the launch of The Nigerian Legislature: A Practical Guide for Lawmakers, a book authored by the retiring Clerk to the House of Representatives, Oscar Okoro.

The event also marked Okoro’s 60th birthday and retirement from the National Assembly Service after years of public service.

Speaking at the occasion, Faleke described Okoro as a dedicated and hardworking public servant whose commitment to duty and adherence to professional standards contributed significantly to the effective functioning of the legislature.

According to him, civil servants play a critical role in government by providing the technical expertise required for policy implementation and institutional continuity.

“The civil service mainly builds the country. They are the technocrats. They are the people that we politicians rely on,” Faleke said.

He added that adherence to established rules and procedures by civil servants would strengthen governance and improve the nation’s development outcomes.

“Even when the politician says let us do it the other way and he says no, let us follow the rules, I think Nigeria will be better off,” he stated.

The lawmaker further praised Okoro for his strong work ethic and dedication to service, noting that he consistently prioritised excellence over personal gain.

“Okoro is a very hardworking guy. Unlike others, he is not money conscious. Every time I push him hard, he works harder,” he said.

Also speaking, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, Hon. Abubakar Saidu, described Okoro as a consummate professional whose dedication, patience and commitment distinguished him throughout his career.

“He is very dedicated, very patient, professional, excellent and committed, as well as exemplary when it comes to the job,” Saidu said, adding that their relationship extended beyond official engagements.

The House Spokesman, Hon. Akin Rotimi, also paid tribute to the retiring clerk, describing him as a model public servant whose career should serve as an inspiration to younger officers in the public service.
