Starmer: Resign over failure to deliver campaign promises, Obi tells Tinubu

By Myke Uzendu, Abuja

The Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to consider resigning from office, citing what he described as the administration’s failure to fulfil key campaign promises and improve the living conditions of Nigerians.

Obi made the call on Monday while reacting to the announcement by the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer of his intention to resign amid growing public dissatisfaction over economic conditions and governance in the United Kingdom.

In a statement posted on his X handle and titled “Owning Up to Leadership Failures and Political Responsibility,” the former Labour Party presidential candidate said leaders should be prepared to take responsibility when they fail to meet the expectations of the people.

According to Obi, the British Prime Minister’s decision to step down reflected a culture of accountability in which public officials accept responsibility for perceived shortcomings in governance.

Drawing parallels with Nigeria, Obi recalled that before becoming President, Tinubu had repeatedly criticized former President Goodluck Jonathan over insecurity and economic hardship and had at various times called for his resignation.

He noted that during the 2023 election campaign, Tinubu promised to improve electricity supply, strengthen security, fight corruption, and enhance the welfare of Nigerians.

However, Obi argued that the country’s situation has deteriorated since the President assumed office.

“Electricity supply remains unreliable, insecurity has intensified in many areas, including kidnappings, and economic hardship has deepened rather than eased,” Obi said.

He added that challenges in infrastructure, transportation, and anti-corruption efforts have also persisted, claiming that the country is currently facing some of its most difficult conditions.

The NDC presidential candidate maintained that public office should be treated as a sacred trust and that leaders must be held accountable for their performance.

Obi said that a resignation by the President would help foster a political culture of accountability and responsibility, while sending a strong message that leadership failures should have consequences.

He further argued that ending what he described as a culture of impunity would contribute to building a better future for coming generations and advancing the vision of a “New Nigeria.”

The Presidency had not responded to Obi’s comments as of the time of filing this report.Note: Since this is a political allegation and criticism, adding the final paragraph seeking or noting the absence of the Presidency’s response helps maintain journalistic balance.r of his intention to resign amid growing public dissatisfaction over economic conditions and governance in the United Kingdom.
