NUC approves new university for Taraba

By Felix Khanoba

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially approved the Taraba State University of Tropical Agriculture, Science, Technology and Climate Action, Gembu, paving the way for the institution to commence the process of becoming fully operational.

The certificate of recognition was presented on Thursday in Abuja by the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Professor Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu, to a Taraba State delegation led by Governor Agbu Kefas.

Speaking during the presentation, Ribadu said the recognition raises the number of universities in Nigeria to 313. He noted that the establishment of the institution reflects the Taraba State Government’s resolve to expand access to higher education while harnessing the state’s rich agricultural and environmental potential.

He observed that agriculture remains critical to Nigeria’s development but continues to grapple with challenges relating to food security and productivity, adding that climate change has made the situation more pressing and underscores the importance of a specialised institution.

“The decision by the state government to establish a university focused on agriculture, science, technology and climate action demonstrates a clear understanding of the issues we face.

“In many respects, the environment itself becomes part of the teaching and research infrastructure,” he said, while acknowledging that the location also presents accessibility challenges that must be addressed through sustained government investment.”

Ribadu, however, explained that the recognition does not amount to immediate approval for academic operations. According to him, the commission will conduct a resource verification exercise to ascertain whether the university possesses the required personnel and facilities before it can admit students.

He added that the commission would forward copies of the recognition letter to key agencies, including the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund) and other stakeholders in the education sector.

The NUC boss also urged the Taraba State Government to provide consistent funding for the new institution while sustaining support for existing tertiary institutions in the state, stressing that universities require long-term financial commitment beyond the lifespan of any administration.

Governor Kefas, in his remarks, said the establishment of the university would help showcase the Mambila Plateau, an area he noted is largely unknown to many Nigerians despite its immense agricultural and ecological value.

He assured the commission that the state government would comply with all regulatory requirements and continue collaborating with the NUC to ensure the university meets prescribed standards. He also pledged continued support for Taraba State University alongside the newly recognised institution.

The governor further disclosed that the state plans to shorten the university’s lengthy name to make it easier to identify and administer, while reiterating the government’s commitment to working with the commission.

“We will continue to partner with you, take your advice and follow due process to ensure this university stands the test of time,” he said.
