The Presidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi has described the recent High Court ruling in Lokoja concerning the legal status of NDC as a temporary setback, insisting that it will not derail the party’s quest to provide an alternative platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Spokesperson of Peter Obi Media Office Idris Zekeri Jnr., said the organisation had received numerous enquiries from media organisations and concerned Nigerians following the court’s decision.
According to him, the party’s legal team is already reviewing the judgment and will take the necessary legal steps, including filing an appeal where necessary.
“We have received the news of today’s bizarre ruling from the court in Lokoja regarding the legal status of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). While our legal teams are thoroughly reviewing the judgment to initiate immediate corrective and appellate measures, our principal urges all our supporters, coalition partners and patriots nationwide to remain absolutely calm and focused,” the statement read.
POMR said it had anticipated resistance in its efforts to challenge the country’s political establishment, maintaining that legal obstacles would not deter its resolve.
The organisation described the ruling as “a hurdle, not a stop sign,” adding that its commitment to building what it called a transparent, legitimate and formidable political alternative remained intact.
It further expressed confidence that its legal rights would be defended through the courts and urged supporters not to lose hope.
“We always knew that the journey to dismantle a deeply entrenched and grossly underperforming political status quo would be met with fierce institutional resistance and unexpected legal detours.
“Today’s ruling is a hurdle, not a stop sign. Our commitment to providing a transparent, legitimate and formidable alternative for Nigerians remains unshakeable. The platform we are building is robust, and our legal rights will be vigorously pursued.
“Do not be discouraged; the vehicle may face a temporary breakdown, but our destination remains non-negotiable,” the statement added.
The former Anambra State governor reiterated that the movement remained focused on its vision of a “New Nigeria” and called on supporters to remain peaceful while awaiting further legal developments.
