Tinubu extends FCT water revolution to four Area Councils

By Daniel Tyokua

President Bola Tinubu has pledged to extend the Federal Capital Territory’s ongoing construction and expansion of water supply project to Kuje, Kwali, Gwagwalada and Abaji Area Councils as part of his administration’s drive to provide potable water to underserved communities.

He disclosed this during the inauguration of the Bwari Township Water Supply Network, on Tuesday.

Tinubu represented by his wife, Oluremi, said
the planned construction and expansion followed the successful delivery of water projects in Karu area of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), and Bwari Area Council, which he promised that no part of the FCT would be left behind.

He said the initiative aligns with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to decentralise development and bridge the infrastructure gap between Abuja city centre and satellite communities.

Tinubu described access to clean water as a fundamental right rather than a privilege, saying the government was committed to ending decades of inadequate water supply in the nation’s capital.

He recalled directing the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to immediately implement the project after reviewing the intervention plan for Bwari and neighbouring communities.

Tinubu explained that the newly commissioned 198-kilometre water pipeline network, constructed by China Geo-engineering Construction (CGC) Limited, links Bwari Township and surrounding communities to the treated water source at the Lower Usuma Dam.

The President said the project would reduce dependence on untreated boreholes and streams, improve public health by tackling waterborne diseases, and provide residents with reliable access to potable water.

He added that the project generated more than 1,600 direct and indirect jobs during construction, creating economic opportunities for young people in the area.

Tinubu stressed that his administration had not only approved the project but also ensured the timely release of funds to guarantee its completion ahead of schedule.

He commended FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike for driving infrastructure development across the territory, citing improvements in internally generated revenue and the execution of multiple road, housing and water projects.

The president also urged residents of Bwari to safeguard the newly completed facility against vandalism, describing it as a public asset built with taxpayers’ resources for the benefit of the community.

“We don’t make excuses; we deliver results.
Last year, it was the Lower Usuma Dam Phase II rehabilitation; last month, it was the Karu water network; today, it is Bwari. And before our tenure is over, this water revolution will fully cover Kuje, Kwali, Gwagwalada and Abaji,” Tinubu said.
