The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial candidate for Anambra South, Chief Ebuka Onunkwo has called for a strict adherence to building standards.
Chief Onunkwo’s called followed the tragic collapse of a private hostel in Amaokpala, near the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, in Orumba North LGA, which allegedly claimed lives, left several persons injured, and caused immense distress to families.
He said, “My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking incident. I also pray for the speedy recovery of those receiving medical treatment and remain hopeful that those still unaccounted for, if any, will be reached safely by the ongoing rescue efforts.
“I commend the bravery and dedication of the emergency responders, security agencies, medical personnel, volunteers, and community members who have worked tirelessly since the incident occurred. Their courage and selfless service embody the resilience and compassion for which our people are known.
“This tragedy is a painful reminder of the importance of strict adherence to building standards, effective regulatory oversight, and regular structural inspections, particularly for facilities accommodating students and other residents.
“As the appropriate authorities carry out a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse, I urge that the findings be made public and that anyone found to have acted negligently be held accountable in accordance with the law.
“Beyond determining responsibility, we must also ensure that adequate support is provided to the victims and their familstndarsies. I call on the Anambra State Government, relevant emergency agencies, and well-meaning individuals and organizations to continue mobilizing every available resource to support rescue operations, medical care, and humanitarian assistance.
“As a son of Anambra South and one who is deeply committed to the welfare and safety of our people, I stand in solidarity with the people of Amaokpala, Oko, and the entire Orumba North community during this difficult time.”
