Kogi State Commissioner for Education, Wemi Jones, has reaffirmed that the ban on sign-out ceremonies in tertiary institutions across the state remains in force, urging heads of institutions to sustain compliance with the directive.
Jones stated this Yesterday, during an official visit to Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, where he described the policy as a critical measure aimed at promoting discipline and ensuring students remain focused on their academic pursuits.
The commissioner also commended the management of the Polytechnic, led by Rector, Prof. Salihu Sanusi Avidime, for what he described as remarkable achievements recorded within seven months in office.
Speaking during the visit to the institution’s main campus in Lokoja, Jones said the progress made by the current administration was unprecedented, adding that he had followed many of the institution’s milestones through media reports before the visit.
He praised the principal officers of the Polytechnic for their support and cooperation with the Rector, stressing that effective administration of tertiary institutions requires collective commitment and teamwork.
Jones charged the management to strengthen oversight mechanisms, safeguard the integrity of the institution and remain committed to delivering quality education.
He also called for sustained leadership and collaboration to consolidate the gains already recorded and position the Polytechnic for greater achievements.
Responding, the Rector, Prof. Avidime, expressed appreciation to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for the confidence reposed in the institution’s management and the continued support extended to the Polytechnic.
He described Governor Ododo as an education-friendly leader whose interventions had continued to drive development in the institution.
The Rector also commended the Commissioner for Education for his contributions to the growth of the sector, noting that Jones had played significant roles in educational reforms and the establishment of state-owned universities.
Highlighting achievements recorded by his administration in seven months, Avidime listed the provision of two motorised boreholes, renovation and modernisation of the Polytechnic library, and the ongoing construction of a 124-bed-space hostel at the Itakpe Campus, among other projects.
He, however, noted that the institution still faces some challenges and appealed for sustained government support to address them.
Avidime assured the state government of the management’s commitment to supporting Governor Ododo’s education agenda and contributing to the overall development of the sector in Kogi State.
In a vote of thanks, the Registrar of the Polytechnic, Dr Yahaya Segun Alilu, commended the governor for his support to the institution and pledged continued cooperation with the state government.
Jones, who was accompanied by his Personal Assistant, Hon. Obafemi Rufus, also engaged the Polytechnic management on the progress, prospects and challenges facing the institution, stressing the need for closer collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the Polytechnic to advance educational development in the state.
