First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged Nigerians to reduce food waste, dispose of refuse properly and adopt sustainable practices to promote cleaner and healthier communities.
Mrs Tinubu made the call in a message commemorating the 2026 World Cleanup Day, observed on Sunday, September 20, with the theme, “From Clean Plates to Clean Cities.”
She said the theme underscored the need for individuals and communities to recognise that keeping the environment clean begins with reducing the waste generated.
According to her, the focus on food waste is particularly important at a time when climate change, conflicts and other global challenges continue to disrupt food production and supply.
“We must, therefore, become more responsible in how we purchase, prepare, consume, and preserve food,” she said.
The First Lady encouraged households, businesses and communities to take practical steps towards reducing food waste and ensuring proper disposal of refuse.
She also called for the adoption of sustainable practices capable of protecting the environment and improving public health.
“Through our collective efforts, we can build cleaner, healthier communities for present and future generations,” she said, while wishing Nigerians a happy World Cleanup Day 2026.
