It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that I received the news of the passing of my former Media Aide, Mr. Mike Odiakose, on September 17, 2026.
The death of Mike Odiakose is not only a huge loss to his family and to me personally, but also a painful blow to the journalism profession and the political communication community in Nigeria. Considering the immense contributions he made to the media industry and public affairs over the years, his departure has created another vacuum that will be difficult to fill.
Mike Odiakose was an accomplished political journalist whose professional career spanned several reputable media organizations, including The Observer, Nigerian Pilot and Daily Assets newspapers. Through his dedication, integrity and commitment to factual reporting, he distinguished himself as one of the respected journalists on the political beat, particularly in his extensive coverage of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
My relationship with Mike began during my tenure as the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, 2008 – 2012. At that time, he was among the active journalists who closely covered the activities of the party. What stood him out was not only his professionalism, but also his willingness to offer constructive advice and perspectives that often enhanced our engagement with the media. His understanding of political communication, combined with his balanced and insightful approach to journalism, earned my admiration and respect for him.
When I was appointed the Special Adviser, Political Affairs by the former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, in June 2014, I did not hesitate to bring Mike into my team as my Media Aide. It was a decision I never regretted. Throughout that difficult transitional period, we worked together very closely, and he demonstrated, calmness, diligence, competence, and uncommon loyalty. He provided invaluable support and guidance, helping to shape effective media interventions ensuring that our communication satrategies reflected clarity, professionalism and purpose. It was because of Odiakose’s continued support and solidarity, we recently nominated him to serve as a member of the National Movement for Tinubu Shettima – 2027. Alas! We have missed a Jewel.
Beyond his official responsibilities, Mike became a trusted confidant and a dependable ally long after the Presidential elections of 2015. He was a man of humility, sincerity and wisdom. His counsel was always thoughtful, and his commitment to duty was unwavering. He carried out every assignment with a sense of responsibility that reflected his passion for excellence and service.
The news of his passing came as a rude shock, especially at a time when Nigeria is once again approaching another important phase of its democratic journey. The nation has lost a seasoned journalist whose wealth of experience and institutional knowledge would have continued to enrich political reporting and public discourse.
I wish to convey my heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, friends, professional colleagues, and associates. I also wish to commiserate with my friends at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), particularly the Chairperson and Executive Committee members of the FCT Council, which has in recent times witnessed the painful loss of several distinguished members of the Council.
While we mourn Mike Odiakose’s departure, we must also celebrate a life that was dedicated to truth, professionalism, friendship and service. Mike Odiakose leaves behind a legacy of excellence, integrity and commitment that will continue to inspire younger generations of journalists and media practitioners.
On behalf of my family, associates and members of the National Movement for Tinubu-Shettima 2027 – Forward Nigeria, I pray, may the Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, and give his family, friends and colleagues the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.
May his gentle soul find rest in eternal peace.
