The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), has called on Nigerians to remain united in faith and support the nation’s security forces as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by his Special Assistant (Media), Leah Katung-Babatunde, the minister said national security remained the foundation for unity, peace and shared prosperity, stressing the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and restoring lasting peace across all regions.
Musa made the call while speaking at an inter-denominational church service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The service, with the theme, “Anchored on Hope: The Path to Divine Stability and Shared Prosperity,” brought together senior government officials, Christian faithful, members of the diplomatic corps and other dignitaries.
The Defence Minister, who delivered the first Scripture reading, said the country’s hope for a peaceful, secure and prosperous future remained unwavering, urging Nigerians to play their part in strengthening national cohesion.
“As we mark 66 years of our nationhood, our hope for a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Nigeria remains unshakeable,” he said.
According to him, security should not be viewed merely as an operational responsibility but as a critical foundation for national unity and economic prosperity.
“Security is not merely an operational task; it is the fundamental foundation upon which national unity and shared prosperity are built,” Musa said.
He further urged citizens to support personnel of the Armed Forces and other security agencies, stressing that collective commitment was necessary to achieve lasting peace.
“I urge all Nigerians to remain steadfast, support our men and women in uniform, and unite in faith as we build a nation anchored on divine stability,” he said.
The service was attended by the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; Service Chiefs; members of the diplomatic community and senior clergy.
Akpabio, in his remarks, offered prayers for the nation and emphasised the need for harmony and collective efforts towards achieving sustainable peace.
Akume, who delivered the vote of thanks, also stressed the importance of democratic stability as Nigeria approaches future civic milestones.
“As we look toward the 2027 elections ahead, let us remember that democracy is sustained by peace and unity,” the SGF said, urging Nigerians to continue to support the democratic process.
The inter-denominational service ended with the ceremonial cutting of the 66th Independence Anniversary cake by Musa and other dignitaries.
