Five persons in the early hours of Sunday lost their lives in a boat mishap in Anambra State.
The victims were said to be sailing from a Kogi community to Anambra through the River Niger where they met their untimely end.
The incident according to a source who identified himself as Obulum happened on Sunday morning and that the victims were mainly of women and children.
Obulum said that the dead victims could not be identified but suspected that they must be sailing from Kogi to Anambra State.
He however pointed out that there is possibilities that indigenes of Anambra State may also be involved in the mishap.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Anambra command, Tochukwu Ikenga (DSP) has confirmed the incident.
He said that the command received a distress call and rushed to the incident spot, and were able to rescue about thirty persons.
“Our marine operatives on getting the distress call about the incident responded swiftly. We were able to rescue over 30 of the passengers alive and recover the five lifeless bodies in the depths of the sea and the capsized boat.
“Preliminary information revealed that the boat was from Kogi state, conveying goods and passengers before the unfortunate incident occurred,” he said.
