…. Conducts factory visits to China, India to certify CNG components

As part of the activities to mark the 2024 World Standards Day, the management and staff members of Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) as well as other relevant agencies on Saturday took to the streets in the Wuse area of Abuja to raise awareness on the importance of standardisation.
Flagging-off the #NigeriaWalksforStandard, which took off from Shoprite car park, Wuse zone 5, the Director-General/Chief Executive of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, urged Nigerians to embrace standardisation to turn around the fortunes of the economy.
He said : “We are raising awareness on the importance of standardisation in the global economy, importance of standardisation for industrialization.
“We want the world to know that standard is very important. As I have said in different fora, standards is the bedrock of what we do, it is the key for what we do. All what we do take its root from standardisation; you talk about conformity assessment, certification, regulation, and others. Whatever we do, if we don’t recognise the importance of standards, then we are wasting our time.”
While describing the theme of 2024 World Standards Day, ‘Our Shared Vision for a Better World : Standards for the Climate’, as apt, Dr Okeke commended the technical committee of SON, experts, and other stakeholders for their roles in the development of standards in the country.
On his part, the Director of Standards Development, Yahaya Bukar, said the theme of 2024 World Standards Day also emphasised the importance of deployment of technology in boosting standardisation towards meeting some of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“The theme specifically addresses Sustainable Development Goals – 9 (SDGs-9), which focuses on industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
“It restates the need to tackle global challenges such as poverty, education, and the absence of peace.
“The goal is to utilise standards to foster collaboration and innovation, particularly through the responsible application of artificial intelligence in various sectors,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Director General of SON, Dr Ifeanyi Okeke, said in line with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda, the Organisation has adopted 88 international standards for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) products to support the success of CNG initiatives.
The SON boss said the Organisation has also conducted factory visits to China and India to certify CNG components.
Okeke, who made this known in his speech on the 2024 World Standards Day, said, “Additionally, SON is a member of the committee developing the Natural Gas Vehicles Monitoring System (NGVMS), aimed at overseeing the implementation of CNG systems in vehicles and to ensure the use of quality products in Nigeria.
” SON has also conducted factory visits to China and India to certify CNG components and kits, prioritising safety and quality assurance.”
