The House of Representatives has reiterated its commitment to enhancing Local Government Councils’ capacity to enact effective bye-laws driving grassroots development. Hon. Richard Bamisile, Chairman of the House Committee on Delegated Legislation, made this assurance at a national retreat in Abuja.
The retreat aims to enhance the bye-law-making process at the local government level. Rep. Bamisile emphasized that legislation must reflect the realities and aspirations of the people. “The strength of our democracy lies not only in our institutions but in our ability to listen, collaborate, and act in the best interest of our communities,” he said.
Hon. Bamisile urged participants to actively engage in discussions, highlighting the importance of collaboration. The sessions will focus on strategies to empower local governments to create impactful bye-laws tailored to their communities’ unique needs.
ALGON President, Mr. Bello Lawal, described the workshop as a unique opportunity to give Local Governments a stronger voice in Nigeria’s fiscal architecture. “Together, we shall move closer to the Nigeria of our dreams, where every community enjoys basic services and every child has access to quality education, healthcare, and food security,” he said.
The retreat will draw from ALGON’s experience in reviewing the Vertical Revenue Allocation Formula. This input will shape parliamentary efforts to ensure resources are allocated fairly and effectively.
Hon. Bamisile noted that the workshop’s outcomes would strengthen intergovernmental relations and deepen legislative harmony. This aligns with the House’s goal to support President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Mr. Lawal expressed his conviction that the retreat’s outcomes would bring Nigeria closer to its dreams. He urged participants to bring bold ideas and a strong sense of responsibility to the deliberations.
