Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has formally declared her intention to contest the Ogun State governorship on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja, Obasanjo said she recently joined the ruling party as a card-carrying member and is seeking its nomination for the governorship race.
“I am sure not only will we succeed in getting the nomination, we will also succeed in governing Ogun State in a way that will make APC even greater,” she told journalists.
The former senator and ex-Commissioner for Health said her return to active politics followed repeated appeals from supporters across Ogun State; and dismissed suggestions that her father influenced her decision to join the APC, describing it as a personal choice.
Obasanjo also expressed confidence that Nigeria could elect its first female governor, citing the APC’s support for increased women’s political participation.
Addressing concerns about zoning the ticket to Ogun West Senatorial District, she said the race remains open and that any successful candidate must be able to win support across the state’s three senatorial zones.
She pledged to focus on education, agriculture, transportation and industrial development if elected.
“I have also put myself in the ring to be nominated by the party as the governorship candidate for APC in Ogun State. I’m sure not only will we succeed in getting the nomination, we’ll also succeed in governing Ogun State in a way that will make APC even greater in that state and in the nation”, she said.
