Don’t resume office till May 12, ADC tells newly elected officers

By Myke Uzendu, Abuja

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has clarified that its newly elected state executives and other party officers will only assume office after their formal inauguration scheduled for May 12, 2026.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi on Friday, the ADC stressed that the tenure of the newly elected officials would not begin until the expiration of the current executives’ tenure and the completion of the official swearing-in process.

The party said the clarification became necessary to avoid confusion within its ranks and ensure strict adherence to constitutional procedures guiding leadership transitions.

“For the avoidance of doubt, all existing executives remain the duly recognised officers of the party until the completion of this constitutional transition process,” the statement noted.

The ADC cautioned newly elected officials, particularly at the state level, against taking any premature actions or making representations that could be interpreted as assuming office before the stipulated date.

It warned that such conduct could undermine party discipline and disrupt internal cohesion at a time when the party is working to consolidate its structures nationwide.

The development comes amid ongoing efforts by the ADC to strengthen internal democracy and maintain order within its leadership framework, following recent congresses held across the federation.

According to the party, adherence to due process remains critical in preserving institutional integrity and ensuring a smooth transition of leadership at all levels.

The statement further reaffirmed the ADC’s commitment to constitutionalism, discipline, and transparency, noting that all members are expected to align with the party’s laid-down rules and procedures.

The party urged stakeholders to remain focused on building a strong and united platform capable of delivering on its objectives, while avoiding actions that could create unnecessary tension within its ranks.

The ADC maintained that the May 12 inauguration date, or any subsequent date that may be officially communicated, remains the only legitimate point at which newly elected executives will formally take over their responsibilities.
