Insecurity: Presidency advises Nigerians to avoid night travel

By Chesa Chesa

The Presidency has advised Nigerians to avoid travelling at night, particularly on long-distance routes, citing growing security concerns across parts of the North Central region.

In a Community Security Advisory issued on Tuesday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North Central), Dr. Abiodun Essiet, urged travellers to exercise heightened caution and prioritise daytime travel to reduce exposure to security risks.

The advisory noted that recent security incidents reported along some major highways in the region had necessitated the warning.

According to the statement, issued under the theme, “Community Safety First,” travellers should schedule their journeys during daylight hours and remain vigilant throughout their trips.

“Transport operators are also encouraged to consider the temporary suspension of night trips until security conditions improve,” the statement said.

The Presidency stressed that the safety and well-being of citizens remain a top priority and called on members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities and complying with all safety directives.

The advisory comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to tackle criminal activities, including banditry, kidnappings, and highway attacks in parts of the country.

Dr. Essiet reiterated the importance of collective vigilance, urging citizens to take precautionary measures while travelling and to support community-based security initiatives aimed at safeguarding lives and property.
