As part of measures to embrace innovations, new technology and improved teaching methods, the Enugu State Ministry of Education has trained some teachers in the state on the Nigeria Learning Passport (NLP), an online learning system through which teachers can improve their knowledge of innovation and quality teaching while retaining their jobs.
The three-day training, which lasted from August 24 to August 26, was sponsored by UNICEF and the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB), in collaboration with the Centre for Learning and Innovation (CELI).
About 300 teachers who participated in the NLP programme will serve as trainers for other teachers involved in the Enugu State Smart School system.
The NLP Coordinator, UNICEF Nigeria, Dr. Harold Kpolime, who spoke to newsmen at Queen’s School, Enugu, training camp, said the training was aimed at equipping teachers in Enugu State to fit efficiently into the Smart Green School system in the state.
According to him, the NLP training for Enugu teachers also provides an opportunity for the teachers to understand emerging trends in artificial intelligence (AI).
He disclosed that those who participated in the training would train others, adding that the training is a continuous process, with all teachers involved linked to a platform.
The UNICEF Education Specialist, Mr. Believe Ekeh, said UNICEF was supporting the training to ensure that the Smart Green School system in Enugu State has enough manpower to operate.
“The training will help Education development in Enugu State. The trainers are mentors who will teach others in their respective schools”, he stated.
One of the participants, Mr. Levi Orjinweke Onuorah, told newsmen that the training had widened his knowledge of digital learning and assured that they would impact the gains of the training on their students.
The Nigeria Learning Passport is a digital education platform aimed at expanding access to quality learning resources for teachers and students across Nigeria.
