The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched an investigation into a clash between Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) officials and commercial motorcyclists in the Life Camp area of Abuja.
The incident occurred at about 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, during enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, on major roads in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the police, the clash began after a VIO operative attached to the FCT Administration’s task force had an altercation with an okada rider.
“The situation subsequently escalated into a confrontation,” the Command said in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh.
The statement added that the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, had ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The Command assures members of the public that further information will be made available as the investigation progresses,” it said.
The police added that normalcy had been restored in the area and urged residents to remain calm and go about their lawful activities.
