Five people have reportedly been killed in a fresh clash between herders and farmers in Paiko community, Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Eyewitnesses, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the conflict began on Saturday and continued into Sunday, claiming the lives of both herders and farmers.
They added that several people sustained injuries and were receiving treatment at undisclosed hospitals in the area.
According to the eyewitnesses, the clash reportedly erupted after herders brought their cattle into the community to graze on farmland, destroying crops and triggering the confrontation.
However, relevant security authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, Mohammed Kasim, on Sunday, called for calm and directed the council’s Security Committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported clash.
Kasim urged all parties involved to exercise restraint, respect the law and refrain from actions capable of escalating tensions or threatening the peaceful coexistence of residents.
He stressed the need for dialogue, mutual understanding and respect for the rule of law in resolving disputes and maintaining peace among communities.
The chairman also appealed to community leaders, farmers, herders, youth groups and other stakeholders to cooperate with security agencies and avoid taking the law into their own hands while the investigation continues.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Muhammad Hassan, the chairman assured residents that the matter would receive the necessary attention.
He urged residents to remain peaceful, law-abiding and committed to the unity and peaceful coexistence of all communities in Gwagwalada Area Council.
