The Nwanyiocha area of Otolo-Nnewi, in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, was thrown into mourning on Tuesday morning after an accident claimed two lives.
The victims were identified as a popular youth known as ‘Skempe’ and Blessing, a driver for an undisclosed bread bakery. Both died on the spot.
An eyewitness said Skempe, who was riding a motorcycle, attempted to overtake a truck but ran into the bakery’s shuttle bus in the process.
He said the impact of the head-on collision killed both victims instantly, blaming the accident on overspeeding, wrongful overtaking and poor visibility caused by an early morning downpour.
A health worker at the scene condemned the attitude of many Nigerians towards emergency situations.
She said rather than rushing the victims to the nearest health facility, sympathisers were crying while others were busy recording videos of the victims.
Another resident blamed police officers who allegedly mount checkpoints in the area to extort commercial bus, tricycle and motorcycle riders, for failing to respond quickly to rescue the victims.
