1,508 projects, 16,000 teachers: Jagaba/Abba students rally behind Gov. Yusuf’s re-election

The Kano State Chapter of JAGABA/ABBA Students’ Mandate 2027 has declared support for Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s re-election bid, pointing to what it described as significant achievements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, water supply and youth empowerment.

The group said its endorsement was informed by the governor’s performance since assuming office in May 2023, particularly his administration’s efforts to address infrastructure challenges, improve public services and create economic opportunities for young people, women, farmers and students.

In a statement issued by its convener, Comrade Nafiu Yunusa, the organisation said the Yusuf administration had demonstrated commitment to improving the living conditions of residents through development initiatives across Kano State’s 44 local government areas.

According to the group, available records show that the administration had executed more than 1,508 development projects valued at over ₦928 billion as of July 2026, comprising 799 completed projects and 709 ongoing.

Yunusa said: “The infrastructure investments include road construction and rehabilitation, drainage, urban renewal, rural roads and other public facilities. The group also commended the government for utilizing more than ₦118 billion to execute critical five-kilometre road projects in 38 local government areas, while approximately ₦169 billion had been invested in urban renewal initiatives.

“These interventions are significant to improving connectivity between communities, facilitating commercial activities, reducing transportation difficulties and expanding access to public services. Access to safe and reliable water remains essential to public health, household welfare and economic development.

“The Yusuf administration has undertaken rehabilitation works at major water facilities, including the Challawa and Tamburawa treatment plants, as well as the restoration of the Goron Dutse Reservoir.”

The group also referenced the governor’s October 2026 Independence Day address, during which he disclosed that the Goron Dutse water project involved the rehabilitation of three reservoirs with a combined storage capacity of approximately 40.4 million litres and the construction of a 15.6-kilometre transmission pipeline linking the Challawa system to the reservoir.

It described the intervention as an important step towards improving water distribution and addressing shortages affecting households and businesses.

On education, the students’ organisation commended the administration for increased budgetary allocations, recruitment of teachers, scholarship opportunities and financial assistance to students.

It noted that nearly one-third of the state’s 2024 and 2025 budgets was devoted to education, while 16,000 teachers were recruited and 2,000 volunteer instructors absorbed into the permanent workforce.

Other initiatives highlighted by the group included a 50 per cent reduction in tuition fees in state-owned tertiary institutions, payment of students’ examination fees and the restoration of the foreign postgraduate scholarship programme.

Yunusa said: “The government has also revived Kano foreign postgraduate scholarship programme, with more than 2,000 students benefiting. The reforms resulted in Kano students emerging as the best-performing candidates in NECO examinations for two consecutive years.

“We recognises his investment in education is an investment in the future of Kano. Improved learning environments, adequate teaching personnel, scholarship opportunities and reduced financial barriers are essential to expanding access to quality education.

“The administration has also introduced interventions aimed at improving access to healthcare and strengthening the state’s health system. More than 300 primary healthcare centres had been renovated, while several facilities had been upgraded to secondary-level healthcare centres.

“The government also recruited over 2,000 health workers, including doctors, pharmacists, nurses, midwives and community health extension workers in its effort to improve healthcare service delivery to the people.

“Other interventions include free caesarean section services for pregnant women, improved medical infrastructure and the establishment of the Kano State Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.”

In agriculture, the group said the state government had distributed fertiliser worth billions of naira to smallholder farmers and invested in irrigation infrastructure and other agricultural development programmes.

It disclosed that the Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project had supported more than 477,000 farmers, while a ₦16 billion irrigation project at Jakara Dam was initiated to boost agricultural production.

The group said sustained investment in irrigation, mechanisation, storage facilities, agricultural inputs and market access would further improve farmers’ productivity, strengthen food security and expand economic opportunities in rural communities.

On youth development, JAGABA/ABBA Students’ Mandate commended the administration for introducing programmes aimed at supporting graduates, entrepreneurs and small business owners.

It specifically cited the empowerment of 1,130 graduates with start-up kits and other resources to promote self-employment, as well as the provision of ₦50,000 start-up capital to thousands of small business operators.

The organisation said such interventions were important in addressing unemployment by encouraging entrepreneurship, skills acquisition and broader participation in the state’s economy.

It also stressed the need for sustained investment in vocational education, technology, innovation, enterprise development and access to finance to enable Kano’s large youth population to contribute meaningfully to economic growth.

The group further highlighted the administration’s ₦2.3 billion livestock entrepreneurship programme, under which 7,158 goats were distributed to 2,386 women across the state’s 44 local government areas.

It said the initiative was designed to provide women with productive assets and sustainable income-generating opportunities through livestock-related businesses.

The organisation called for the expansion of similar programmes to improve women’s access to finance, vocational skills, markets and sustainable livelihood opportunities.

While acknowledging the importance of government policies, the group maintained that their ultimate value should be determined by their impact on the lives of ordinary residents.

It therefore urged the people of Kano to support Yusuf’s administration for another term, arguing that continuity would enable the government to consolidate its investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, water supply, agriculture and human capital development.

The group further claimed that Governor Yusuf had fulfilled 90 per cent of the promises he made to the electorate, describing his record as sufficient justification for another term.

According to the organisation, the choice facing Kano residents in the 2027 governorship election is between sustaining the current development efforts and returning to what it described as a past that neglected the interests of the majority.

It said JAGABA/ABBA Students’ Mandate 2027, Kano State Chapter, had resolved to support Yusuf’s re-election in what it described as the best interest of the state’s future.
