In line with the directive of the state government, the Enugu State Fire Service has commenced fumigation of all markets in the state,as part of proactive measures to prevent the spread of corona virus disease in the state.
The process which commenced at Ogbete mainket Enugu,which is the biggest market in Enugu yesterday was witnessed by the Governor of the state, Dr Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and some members of the state executive council.
Governor Ugwuanyi advised some of the defiant traders to close their shops and go home.The state governmeent has ordered that all markets and borders of the state must be closed as from 6pm on Tuesday,31st March.
The fumigation exercise under the conduct of the state fire service as at yesterday April 1,was extended to the Shoprite Super market at the former Polo park and thereafter taken to the Of artisan market.
Speaking to news men after the exercise,the state chief fire officer,Engr Daniel Okwudiri Ohaa said the exercise will continue and be conducted in all major markets in Enugu state and even the mini markets in the rural areas, as part of proactive measures to ptevent corona virus spread in Enugu.
He commended the state government led by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for providing all the necessary support that will enhance effective fumigation of markets in Enugu state and some other public institutions, promising to discharge the duties equitably.
However,Engr Ohaa said his agency will re strategize to embark on the exercise at night hours based on the fact of non compliance of some of the traders to close their markets.
He disclosed that working at night will help his workers penetrate to all nooks and crannies of the markets for a thorough job.
He said in as much as the chemicals(steroids) are not harmful but continuing with the exercise in the day time while people are loitering about will cause a lot of distractions for his workers and disaffection on the side of the traders.
He pleaded with the people of Enugu state to remain indoors in compliance with the state government directives and apply all safety measures ,as a strategy of controlling the spread of corona disease in Enugu state.
