FCT fire service saves N3.96 bn worth property, loses N1.7bn in 3 years

The Federal Capital Territory ,FCT, Fire Service on Friday said it has saved N3.96 billion naira worth property and lost N1.7 billion in the last 3 years.

Opetunsin Julius, the Assistant Controller General, FCT Fire Service disclosed this during his pull out parade at the fire service headquarters villa gate, Asokoro.

He said the available statistics from 2017-2020 show that the service attended and responded to 1,844 fires and received 136 rescue calls.

Julius explained that, “The FCT fire service statistics for 2017-2020 indicate that the service attended and responded to 1,844 fires and 136 rescue calls. Property worth N1.75 billion was lost within the same years, while N3.96 billion naira was saved”

He said the notable fire outbreak on critical infrastructure include Corporate Affairs Commission, Auditor General’s Office, ECOWAS Secretariat and DSS headquarters Kugbo furniture market.

The outgoing director stated that with the timely intervention of the FCT fire service and other stakeholders, the monumental economic losses were brought under control.

He noted that with the advancement and speed of technology, the department is dire need of hydraulic platform to fight fire and effect rescue in high rise buildings.

“The FCT service department needs additional fire stations to adequately cover the city centre and Area Councils, aggressive awareness on fire prevention and sensitization programs, sustain the school safety initiative programs and procurement of modern firefighting equipment”.

Though he commended the FCT Administration for unending support to the service during his days.
