LASU to break Cocoanut to mark 25th convocation

Lagos State University (LASU) has announced that it will be holding a cocoanut breaking ceremony as part of activities to mark the 25th convocation ceremony of the institution.

The University has also disclosed that out of the 7232 students that will be graduating this year for the 2019/2020 academic session, 112 of them will bag First Class.

The Vice Chancellor of LASU, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello made the disclosures during a Press Conference at the Senate Chamber of the University at Ojo on Wednesday, March 16, 2022. The press briefing was to herald the convocation ceremonies.

“On Monday 21st March, 2022, there will be Coconut Breaking and Cultural Festival at the Badagry Gate Entrance of the University. “As mentioned, 112 students graduated with First Class Degree, which is the highest we have produced so far,” the Vice Chancellor stated. 

The Vice Chancellor also disclosed that the best graduating student in the academic year, Olowu, Benjamin Damilare, from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering had a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.97.

She stated “I am also happy to announce that our best graduating student at this Convocation, Olowu, Benjamin Damilare, from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering had a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.97 which is also a new record in the university, while three (3) of our best graduating students from the Faculty of Science had the same CGPA of 4.81.  

“In addition, the two (2) best Master Degree Students graduated with a perfect CGPA of 5.0. They are from the Department of Religions and Peace Studies and School of Transport and Logistics, respectively,”

Olatunji-Bello stated. Other activities for the event include the Convocation Lecture to be delivered by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Former Lagos State Governor and the Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at Buba Marwa Auditorium in Ojo on March 22, 2022. The theme of the lecture is ‘Global Trends: Nigeria’s Rightful Place in the World.’ The Chairman of the Lecture will be His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Bello Masari.High point of the ceremonies will be the Award of Diplomas, First Degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters which will take place on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at Buba Marwa Auditorium.The Day eight of the ceremonies will be the award of Doctorate Degree (PhD) and Conferment of Rank of Emeritus Professor & Honorary Degrees.

According to the Vice Chancellor, the Rank of Emeritus Professor will be conferred on Distinguished Professor Peter Akinsola Okebukola, OFR while Honorary Doctorate Degree Awards will be conferred on His Excellency, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Governor of Kano State and counterpart,

His Excellency, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, Governor of Borno State.Others are Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO, Nigeria in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) and Mr. Goodie Ibru, OON, Chairman Ikeja Hotel Plc. Olatunji-Bello used the opportunity offered by the conference to avail the public of the strategic goals of the university which are designed to put the institution on world map. They include to make the University a research, innovation and development hub for Lagos State and national development; to ensure that infrastructural facilities are improved upon and readily available for seamless performance of administrative and academic duties; to improve internal generation of revenue with the aim of achieving financial sustainability of the University; to promote welfare of staff and students in the University  and to promote participation in Sports and Recreational Activities. 

The Vice Chancellor also reeled out some of the modest achievements of her six months administration. She said “All academic and professional programmes offered by the Lagos State University have been fully accredited by different relevant bodies and the National Universities Commission; secured approval to establish 3 new Faculties and 1 School namely: Faculty of Allied Health Sciences; Faculty of Pharmacy; Faculty of Environmental Sciences and School of Library, archival and information science which is the 1st in West Africa and Second in Africa.”  

Others include “Maintained and secured collaboration with top institutions within and outside Nigeria, including Cornell University, USA, Delta State University, Delta and Gombe State Universities; organized a research ethics workshop for all interested academic staff; We are also investing massively in infrastructural facilities of the University.

To this effect, we have revamped the LASU printing press, renovated the offices of academic and non-academic staff, renovated the Epe campus, facilitated the deployment of internet across the campuses and plans are underway to improve more of our facilities. We have fully equipped our classrooms, laboratories and libraries. Provision of office furniture and classroom, We have ensured that there is access to proper welfare packages including: payment of salaries on or before 23rd of each month, introduction of free medical check-up for every staff on their birthdays, activated the Lagos State Health Scheme in the University; Prompt payment of 30% of basic salary as end of year 2021 bonus; amongst others. Invested hugely on library E-resources that staff and students can access anywhere,” Olatunji-Bello stated.
