ACCI President Amongs 437 Nominees For National Award

President Muhammadu Buhari has awarded national honour of the Member of the Order of the Federal
Republic (MFR) on the President of Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Dr Al-Mujtaba Abubakar.

Dr Abubakar was among the 437 nominated for the national award and among 75 persons for MFR in recognition of his contributions to the financial sector of the country. 

In a letter of nomination conveying the national award to Dr Abubakar, President Buhari approved the honour to him in the exercise of his power as enshrined in the National Honours Act No 5 of 1964.

The conferment notice signed by the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Sen. George Akume read in part, “I have the honour to formally inform you that the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the conferment of the National Honours on you, in the rank of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (MFR).

Dr. Abubakar started his career as an Assistant Accountant with Broadcasting Company of Northern Nigeria before he served his fatherland at Nigeria Airways, Kaduna as Internal Auditor from 1976 to 1977.

Between 1978 and 1982, Al-Mujtaba Abubakar worked with Federal Super-phosphate Fertilizer Company Limited, Kaduna and Pannell Kerr Forster as Principal Accountant and Assistant Manager, respectively. Thereafter, he worked with New Nigeria Development Company Limited (NNDC), Kaduna; one of the biggest Development banks in Nigeria at that time, and rose to the position of Group Financial Controller in 1986.

He has served in many capacity and in different position as the General Manager of Newdevco Investment and Finance Company Limited; a subsidiary of NNDC, Deputy General Manager/Executive Director of Afribank Nigeria Limited, Managing Director of Assurance Bank Nigeria Limited, former Nigeria Arab Bank Limited.

He became a Partner and Board Member, West Africa sub-region of Akintola Williams Deloitte; a member of Deloitte International and the biggest Accountancy firm in Nigeria.

Dr Abubakar is the current immediate past Managing Director of APT Pensions Funds Managers Limited, a position he occupied since 2012. He sits atop the board of the APT Bureau de Change Limited, and as a non-executive director on the boards of ARMECO-Kaduna, Zenith Bank Plc and member Board of Trustees of the Society for Family Health. He has also served at various times, on the boards of Kaduna Textiles Limited, Nigeria Accounting Standards Board, Afribank Insurance Brokers Company, IBWA Finance Company Limited, Afribank Merchant Bank (International) Nigeria Limited, APT Securities and Funds Ltd, and APT Pension Funds Managers Limited.
