By Stellamaries Amuwa

Former military Head of State, retired General Yakubu Gowon has advised youth to pay more attention to vocational skill acquisition to be financial independent and self reliant.

He also called on State Governments to upgrade facilities in orientation camps in their various states.

Speaking during the inauguration of an ultramodern Information Technology Center and exhibition of skill acquisition products at the NYSC Headquarters, Abuja on Wednesday, General Gowon pointed out that the introduction of skill acquisition into the orientation course of NYSC had led to the creation of job opportunities for many youths who had become business owners and employers of labour.

He added that the ICT center would enhance the digitization of the NYSC mobilization process and improve other processes of the scheme.

He appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to assent to the NYSC Trust Fund, as it would help improve activities of the scheme.

Meanwhile, the Director General, NYSC, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed said operations of the scheme had been challenged with increased data with the increasing number of corps members and made introduction of ICT impossible.

General Ahmed pledged more commitment and excellent service delivery to the nation through the national youth service corps scheme.
