Economic recovery: Salako led FMEnv moves to develop circular economy roadmap

Determined to contribute significantly to the economic recovery agenda of President Bola Tinubu, Federal Ministry of Environment has concluded plans to develop a circular economy framework.

Recall that the Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako on assumption of office vowed that the Ministry has keyed into the Renewed Hope Agenda and will develop policies that will positively affect lives of the people.

In Abuja on Thursday, stakeholders in the environmental sector at a one day national stakeholder’s validation workshop of the Nigeria circular economy roadmap met in furtherance of this objective.

The circular roadmap been developed will create a path to a circular economy that will help create new jobs and build more resilience that will help avoid future disruptions while solving many other ongoing crises, from resource scarcity to biodiversity and climate change.

Declaring the workshop open, Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Environment, Ibrahim Idris, said it is coming at a time when the global community including Nigeria is making concerted efforts in innovative resource management through circular economy practices.

The Permanent Secretary represented by Director Human Resources of the Ministry, Lawrence Adigwe, said the validation of the Nigeria Circular Economy Roadmap is part of the process for its development to support Nigeria’s transition to circular economy.

He said the development of the Circular Economy Road Map Framework is to guide Nigeria’s transition to a more circular economy in the short, medium and long terms (2023-2050).

The Permanent Secretary noted the role of the EU and ECOWAS in developing the National Circular Economy Roadmap.

He noted that, European Union through the SWITCH to GREEN facility is providing support for the development of the Nigeria Circular Roadmap.

In his speech at the event, Head of Green and Digital economy EU delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Inga Stefanowicz said that the development of the circular economy is very dear to heart for member states.

She said that circular economy has a potential to develop the waste management sector.
“This will new create jobs and enhance business in the circular economy development.”
