Imo election: IGP engages stakeholders, assures of adequate security

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has assured political actors and other critical stakeholders that there will be adequate security before, during and after the Imo state gubernatorial election.
He, therefore, appealed to all political leaders and their followers to embrace peace In order to have a hitch- free election.
He made the appeal at a meeting with critical stakeholders in Imo state on Thursday.
The IGP therefore, warned individuals and groups who may contemplate disrupting the elections to be ready for harsh consequences as the police will not tolerate any act that will jeapodise free and election.
He noted that officers deployed have been charged to take decisive action against anyone found engaging in unlawful activities that undermine the integrity of the electoral process. He also reiterated warning against the use of VIP escorts, sirens, and illegal movements on election day.
The IGP assured of the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to provide a secured environment for all voters and participants in the electoral process to exercise their franchise without fear of molestation
Egbetokun emphasized that officers deployed for electioneering processes have undergone rigorous training on election monitoring, guaranteeing robust security at polling units, and protecting the fundamental rights of all well-meaning members of the public.
This, he reiterated, is part of the NPF’s thrust in upholding democratic principles.
The IGP, therefore, called on all political parties to engage in constructive dialogue and embrace a peaceful atmosphere during the election period in order to foster a harmonious and serene environment for a credible, free and fair election.
The IGP underscored the importance of citizens having confidence in the professionalism, impartiality and commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to non-interference in the electoral process.
He noted that the primary objective of the police is to ensure a safe and peaceful environment for the elections.
Stakeholders were assured that security for all citizens is a top priority and that police will work diligently to maintain peace and safeguard the electoral process from any disruptions.
Prominent politicians in attendance at the meeting include the Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly; Chief Mike Okiro (IGP Rtd.); chairmen of 8 political parties; traditional rulers led by His Royal Majesty Eze Dr. EC Okeke, the Eze-Imo of Imo State; Imo State Resident Electoral Commission; religious leaders; Heads of security agencies in Imo State; members of the Civil Society; youths and student groups.
