The disaster caused by gully erosion at Obeagu Comnunity,along Achi – Awgu road in Enugu state, is seemingly the worst deep cut on any federal road in Nigeria at the moment.
The Oji River -Achi- Awgu Federal road connects several communities within Achi and Awgu, aiding their daily economic activities. It is also a major route to link Enugu to Port Harcourt express road.
The depth and width of the gully erosion on it precisely at Obeagu near Awgu constitutes a death trap to comnutters who have continued to ply the road,at their own risk.
From all indication, the road is likely to carve in(cut off) completely as a result of the protruding gully erosion,when next there is a torrential downpour .
Many political stakeholders and prominent people from the area has been raising their voices and ‘Save our Soul’ messages meant to draw the attention of the authorities to the ugly plight of the road, the adverse effects and avoidable consequences.
However, while hoping and waiting for the attention of the authorities, Some concerned citizens as part of an interim measure to avoid major road mishap at the spot,Some concerned citizens have started donating trips of sands and other materials for an immediate intervention on the road through Community efforts.
The community effort is initiated by a former Councillor in Oji River local government area, Hon. Ugo Omere, who appealed for donation of trips of gravels,Sand and Chippings from concerned citizens. so they can take the burden of filling the deep cuts by themselves, pending government intervention.
Hon. Ugo Omere is also appealing for youths from the nearby communities to voluntarily participate in the project, starting Wednesday,15th October, 2025.
Hon.Omere commended all the concerned citizens who freely donated trips of sands for the project, while appealing for more from others.
He disclosed that the much donated so far will be used to take off the project.
