The House of Representatives will focus on fine-tuning the Electoral Act (amendment) bill, reviewing key constitutional provisions, and scrutinizing the 2026 budget, Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Kalu has said.
Kalu disclosed this during plenary session on Tuesday as lawmakers returned from the Christmas and New Year recess.
The House held a valedictory session to mourn the deaths of three Senators: Senator Godiya Akwashiki, Senator Okechukwu Ezea, and Senator John Kojo-Brambaifa. Hon. Kalu informed members of the Senators’ deaths and explained that proceedings were adjourned in line with the House’s Standing Rules.
Kalu highlighted the Electoral Act as a major legislative milestone for 2026. “There are targets and milestones that we hope to achieve this year. One of them is the Electoral Act. The coming days will show the Senate doing their part, having done our part,” he said.
He added that any remaining issues in the bill would be promptly addressed.
He said the House will also focus on specific provisions of the Constitution that have undergone amendment processes. Kalu assured that the Assembly would work to make the government’s renewed hope agenda a practical reality.
On the 2026 budget, Kalu assured that thorough scrutiny would ensure it serves as an effective tool for governance and national development.
“The budget is currently before us, and I am sure that with your support from various committees of the House, we will do due diligence in making sure that the budget becomes a working instrument for the MDAs and for the nation at large,” he stated.
Lawmakers are expected to resume full legislative activities on Wednesday.
