The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) has praised the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for what it described as prompt and firm action in wrapping up investigations into allegations involving former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
The anti-graft agency confirmed that El-Rufa’i has been served with multiple charges and was arraigned on Tuesday before the Federal High Court in Kaduna.
In a statement signed by its Director of Strategic Communication, Tunji Bamidele, the group said the development marks a notable milestone in the country’s anti-corruption drive and efforts to strengthen accountability within public institutions.
Bamidele pointed out that the allegations against the former governor are weighty, including conversion and possession of public property, as well as money laundering, as contained in suit number FHC/KD/73/2026.
“The ICPC’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their status, are held accountable for their actions is commendable,” the statement said.
He further disclosed that, in addition to the federal charges, the ICPC has also filed a separate case at the State High Court, with case number KDH/KAD/ICPC/01/26. The charges in that case include abuse of office, fraud, and intent to commit fraud, among others.
According to the group, the filing of cases at both federal and state levels on March 18, 2026, reflects the commission’s resolve to pursue corruption cases comprehensively across all tiers of government.
The group stressed the need for strict adherence to due process in handling the matter, noting assurances from the ICPC that all legal procedures will be followed.
Bamidele said: “It is crucial that the principles of fairness and justice guide the proceedings, ensuring that the rights of all parties involved are upheld.
“The integrity of our judicial system depends on the adherence to these principles, and the DWI stands firmly in support of a transparent and accountable legal process.
“As citizens, we must recognize the significance of this moment in our nation’s journey toward greater accountability and transparency in governance. The actions taken by the ICPC serve as a powerful reminder that corruption will not be tolerated, and that those in positions of power are not above the law.”
He called on stakeholders, including civil society groups, the media, and the general public, to stay alert and actively follow developments in the case.
He also urged the judiciary to approach the proceedings with diligence and seriousness.
He added, “The public’s confidence in our legal system hinges on the perception that justice is not only done but is seen to be done. We anticipate that the Federal High Court in Kaduna will uphold the tenets of justice, ensuring that the proceedings are conducted fairly and transparently.
