NEMSA, LASERC forge partnership to boost electrical safety, technical standards

By Stella Odueme

The Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) and the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) have agreed to strengthen collaboration on electrical safety, technical standards enforcement, and the development of a reliable and sustainable electricity market in Nigeria.

The agreement was reached during a courtesy visit by the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LASERC, Mrs. Temitope George, to the NEMSA Corporate Headquarters in Abuja.

Welcoming the delegation in a statement on Tuesday, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NEMSA and Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation, Engr. Olusegun M. Adesayo, described the visit as timely, given the ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s electricity sector following the enactment of the Electricity Act 2023 and the increasing role of state electricity regulators.

Adesayo said the engagement would strengthen institutional collaboration between both organisations through the exchange of technical expertise and the development of practical frameworks for cooperation in electrical safety enforcement, technical inspections, compliance monitoring, metering standards, capacity building, and consumer protection.

He noted that stronger collaboration would improve compliance with technical regulations, boost investor and consumer confidence, and support the delivery of a safer, more reliable, and sustainable electricity supply across the country.

The NEMSA boss also commended LASERC for establishing a robust regulatory framework for the Lagos electricity market and reaffirmed that NEMSA remains the statutory agency responsible for enforcing technical standards and regulations relating to electrical installations, electricity meters, and other electrical equipment to protect lives, property, and critical national infrastructure.

He stressed that achieving a safe, efficient, and resilient electricity sector requires sustained collaboration among regulators, operators, electricity licensees, and other stakeholders.

In her remarks, LASERC Managing Director, Mrs. Temitope George, emphasised the importance of strategic partnerships in building a commercially viable and sustainable electricity market in Lagos State.

She said the Lagos State Electricity Law 2024, signed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, marked a significant milestone in the state’s electricity reform agenda with the establishment of LASERC, the Lagos Independent System Operator (LISO), and the Lagos State Electrification Agency.

According to George, the institutions are expected to drive the development of a competitive, reliable, and sustainable electricity market in the state.

She acknowledged NEMSA’s role under the Electricity Act 2023 as Nigeria’s designated authority for enforcing technical standards and ensuring compliance with electrical installations, metering systems, and safety regulations.
