‎The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has raised concern over the growing threat of money laundering and terrorist financing to Nigeria’s economy and national security.
‎
‎Its Chairman, Musa Aliyu, sounded the warning in Abuja during a media outreach organised by the Intergovernmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa in partnership with the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.
‎
‎Represented by John Odeh, Aliyu said financial crimes are increasingly sophisticated, with criminals leveraging digital tools and online platforms.
‎
‎He noted that while these technologies pose challenges, they also provide opportunities for law enforcement agencies to improve tracking and enforcement.
‎
‎
‎Also speaking, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, said money laundering and terrorist financing remain major threats to Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
‎
‎He called for coordinated and proactive responses among stakeholders to tackle the evolving threats.
‎
‎In his remarks, the Director-General of GIABA, Edwin Harris Jr., represented by Timothy Melaye, said the media plays a critical role in raising awareness and supporting efforts to combat financial crimes.
‎
‎The outreach programme, he said, was designed to equip journalists with tools to investigate and report financial crimes while strengthening regional collaboration.
