A retired Archdeacon of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Venerable Emmanuel Olorunmola Ajayi, who dedicated more than four decades to Christian ministry, has died at the age of 86.
Ajayi passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja, Kogi State.
His son, Omeiza Ajayi of Vanguard Newspapers, confirmed the death in a statement on Monday, describing his father as a devoted servant of God who faithfully completed his life’s mission.
During a ministerial career spanning 41 years, Ajayi served in several dioceses across Nigeria and beyond, ministering in Lagos, Zambia, Kwara, Ondo and Kogi states. He worked under seven Anglican bishops and was widely respected for his dedication to evangelism, church growth and Christian unity.
Known for his passion for church planting, he played key roles in establishing congregations in various communities where he served. He also held leadership positions in the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in several locations, promoting cooperation among Christian denominations.
A gifted musicologist and pianist, Ajayi served as Diocesan Chaplain of Choir Masters and Organists and also as Diocesan Chaplain of the Boys’ Brigade Nigeria, where he mentored generations of young Christians.
One of his most notable contributions was his work in promoting the Ebira language within the church. He spearheaded the translation of the Yoruba hymn book and Anglican liturgy into Ebira, making worship more accessible to indigenous speakers. Between 1993 and 1996, he also organised Ebira literacy classes in Okene and later in his hometown of Ihima.
Ajayi retired as an Archdeacon in 2010 upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70. Despite retirement, he remained active in ministry, offering spiritual guidance, teaching and prayers to churches and ministries across denominational lines.
Funeral activities will begin on June 11, 2026, with an afternoon of tributes and wake at Peace House, Irivogo, Oboroke, Ihima, in Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State. The funeral service will take place on June 12 at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Oboroke, Ihima.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs E.Z. Ajayi, five children, grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and numerous spiritual children and admirers.
